Synopsis

“Naked and Nothing” reveals how the body manages to free itself through corporeal mime. Behind closed doors, on the stage of theater, actors recreate the repertoire of Etienne Decroux, creator of this discipline. Gestures unfold, bodies come to life and the actors’ confidences reveal the difficulties, feelings and hopes of a quest where technique gives way to the sensory aspect. The film plunges us into a world where humans find a body language devoid of any artificiality.

For her first documentary film Vonnick Ribéraud decides to explore the question of bodily liberation by following the work of a physical theater company: the Hippocampe company. With the aim of perpetuation and transmission, the group of actors, led by Luis Torreão, reconstitutes the repertoire of Etienne Decroux, the creator of corporeal mime. Actors have to deal with a demanding discipline which, due to its technicality, can quickly constrain the body to the point of making people forget the creative aspect. But for all that, from a certain stage in the life of the actor, it ends up giving way to bodily liberation. Naked and Nothing, stops on the body and on the expression of its materiality through the prism of an art which gives us a renewed reading of it.
